Hinges for hives and quality fittings beekeeping

In the hive Layens, two types of hinges are mainly used:

• Rear hinges: they are placed on the back of the box, usually of galvanised sheet metal (e.g. 60×60 mm).
• Side hinges: They are fixed to the sides of the fence or lid, allowing the folding opening to one side. They are usually made of galvanised steel of 2 mm thickness with holes of 4 mm for screws or rivets.

The hinges are usually made of galvanised steel to withstand the weathering.

• Thickness: about 2 mm.
• Diameter of holes: 4 mm.
• Common measures: 60×60 mm or similar.
• Finish: galvanised or zinc-plated.

It depends on the type of opening you prefer:

• If the lid opens from behind, use Rear hinges.
• If you prefer side opening, use Layens side hinges.

• Use short screws for the lid and long screws or ricks for the fence, depending on the thickness of the wood.
• The ideal material is the Galvanized or stainless steel to prevent corrosion.
• Choose countersunk or flat head so that it not not stands well.
• Check that the diameter of the screw matches the hinge hole (4–5 mm normally).

Basic steps:

1. Mark the hinge position ensuring that the lid closes properly.
2. Make guide holes with drill bit of the right size.
3. screw first the fixed part to the fence, then the moving part to the lid.
4. Check that the lid opens and closes without slack or friction.

It is recommended to check the hinges at least once a season or before the transhumance. Replace them if:

• They have rust or corrosion.
• They are deformed or loose.
• The lid does not fit well or misaligned.

A good fitting guarantees:

• Greater durability of the hive versus use and transport.
• Safe closure of the lid even with wind or vibration.
• Ease of handling without deteriorating the wood or lids.
