This beekeeping category includes different types of hive markers, including branding irons, paint markers and impact stamps. Branding beehives with a hot iron is compulsory in some regions and also provides a way of proving that a branded hive or frame belongs to the beekeeper whose identification number appears on it. Gas models using butane or propane heat up quickly and are suitable for use in the apiary. Electric models provide constant, clean heat in the workshop. Choose gas for marking at the hive and electric for processing long batches indoors.
Machined brass or bronze provides good heat distribution and a sharp, legible mark. Steel produces a more aggressive burn and takes slightly longer to reach a stable temperature.

A character height of 15–25 mm is commonly used for identification that can be read from a moderate distance. For frames or inner covers, 8–12 mm is usually suitable.

Gas: approximately 1–3 minutes with a plumber's blowtorch. Electric: approximately 5–10 minutes, depending on the power rating of 200–500 W and the mass of the branding head.
Place the head flat against the surface, apply constant pressure for 1–2 seconds and lift it without sliding. If the wood has knots, increase the temperature slightly or apply a second brief touch.
Allow it to cool and clean it with a brass brush. Remove resin with isopropyl alcohol. Do not apply water while the head is hot. Store it in a protective case to prevent damage to the raised design.
Wear gloves and safety glasses, work in a well-ventilated area and use a stable metal stand. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and move combustible materials away. Never leave the hot branding head unattended.
Brand the wood before painting or oiling it so the mark is protected by the finish afterwards. If the wood has already been painted, increase the temperature slightly and test it first.
Use branding heads with digit holders or interchangeable number modules. For fixed information such as a REGA code and telephone number, a solid head provides greater definition and durability.
The REGA registration code is commonly branded for traceability. Check the local regulations to determine whether external identification is compulsory.
A branded mark is permanent and is easier to read on light-coloured wood. A clear wood stain can enhance the contrast and protect the mark.
